How many of you get struck when seeing a Vespa ? Surely you`ve already ridden one, or pretended to ride one. Maybe you had one or you still own one perfectly working. Or you have a memory linked to this object of desire, and when you see one in the street you have to take a photo of it. Cinema has immortalized this icon of the ’60 through unforgettable images: from Roman Holidays, to the seducer Alfie, until the latest U.N.C.L.E. Operation.
What if I would tell you that you can sit down on a Vespa directly in your office or in your living room? Would you think I’m crazy? If you think you have to carry a Vespa in your office, you’re wrong! We see together some creative recycling examples of italian design objects. Simply brilliant in my opinion.
Biel & Biel`s Spanish office has created offices chairs, using the Vespa bottom as seatback, and instead of a lever to lift up or to lower the chair, it has used the bike`s brakes. Each chair can be adjusted, has a reinforced interior structure, handmade and customized according to preference. All pieces are original, in fact they belonged to the ’70 ’80 scooters.
The poltrona da salotto ( living room armchair ) on the other hand is completely Italian, made of leather, inspired to the Vespa rear lines. The designer Antonio Calabrese got inspired from the famous scooter inserting, instead of the motor, the seatback and the leather sitting (faux leather) and wooden painted with the Vespa original colours. Calabrese thought about putting in the seatback the original glass of the 50 Special rear postlight.
Also made in Italy is the table lamp using Vespa’s old pieces. Designed by Maurizio Lamponi Leopardi (Lampony’s lamp). They come in variety, like the real Vespa scooter; with or without fender, round or rectangular … and obviously there are also some models of the Lambretta lamp, which is Vespa’s friend and cousin.
There are collections for design lovers, vintage enthusiastics and for all these people who want to take an Italian piece of history home. An icon of liberty and creativity, well known and loved in all the world, selling itself still today as a design and style icon.
